Two exquisite 1916 Saturday Evening Post front covers illustrated by Sarah S. Stillwell Weber, a prominent name from the Golden Age of American Illustration and a talented female artist who maintained a successful career during a period when few women achieved such recognition.

The Artist:
Sarah Stillwell Weber (1878-1939) was one of the most accomplished female illustrators of her era, creating covers for major publications including The Saturday Evening Post, Ladies' Home Journal, and Collier's. Her work exemplifies the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements that defined early 20th-century American commercial art.

The Covers:

  • Dancing Girls in Flower-Covered Dresses - Two graceful figures rendered in Weber's signature Art Nouveau style, their flowing gowns adorned with delicate floral motifs
  • Woman with Leopard and Peacock-Feather Tiara - A stunning depiction of Gilded Age opulence featuring a beautiful woman lounging with one arm around a leopard's neck, crowned with an elaborate peacock-feather headdress

Details:

  • Both covers: 14" × 10.75"
  • Published in 1916
  • Front covers only
  • Both feature vibrant red accents
  • Art Nouveau/Art Deco styling

Condition:
Good condition for 109-year-old paper ephemera. Light edge wear, minor foxing/staining, light toning, and slight discoloration in a couple of spots—all confined to the white backgrounds. The actual illustration work on both covers remains unaffected and vibrant. Maintaining perfectly white paper for over a century would be quite a feat; these natural signs of age add to the authenticity and historical character of the pieces.

Historical Significance:
These covers capture the intersection of Art Nouveau elegance and Gilded Age opulence, while representing the achievements of a pioneering female artist in the male-dominated field of commercial illustration. A wonderful addition to any collection celebrating the Golden Age of American Illustration.
