This is the front cover only of the October 24, 1936 edition of Collier's Weekly, illustrated by Maxfield Parrish. This cover is one of the most collectible and sought-after magazine covers that Parrish created.
The Image
A celebration of the fall season, this cover features a central figure rendered in classic Parrish style—grinning at the viewer as he dips a paintbrush into a cauldron of paint. He is surrounded by maple leaves in varying shades of orange, green, red, and yellow, the inference being that the figure has painted these leaves himself. This cover captures the feel of autumn brilliantly, immediately recalling the look, feel, and presence of the season for the viewer.
Condition
Although it has been trimmed (not cropped), none of the image itself has been affected—the white margin that usually surrounds Collier's covers has simply been removed. In near mint condition otherwise, with minimal toning and fading, no creases or tears, no foxing, stains, or other imperfections. A rare and special piece that is almost never found in this condition.
Presentation
Matted in Dutch blue and housed in a wooden frame, it makes an elegant composition. This one could be the focal point of a Parrish collection and is a wonderful example of the type of work that made this era the golden age of American illustration.
