A stunning original illustration from the 1925 hardbound first edition of The Knave of Hearts, Maxfield Parrish's final and most highly acclaimed children's book. This authentic period print captures Parrish's masterful technique of layering thin oil glazes over monochromatic underpaintings to achieve an unmatched depth and radiance of color.
Historical Significance:
The Knave of Hearts took Parrish three years to complete and represents the pinnacle of his illustration work. Kitty Owen, the wife of Parrish's grandson, served as the model for Lady Violetta, adding a personal connection to this remarkable piece.
Condition:
Very good condition with minimal toning and fading consistent with age. Minor edge wear is completely concealed by the professional matting and framing. A slight crinkle in the lower left-hand corner is only visible upon close inspection. Professionally extracted from the book.
Dimensions:
- Unframed print: 13.5" × 11"
- Matted and framed: approximately 18.25" × 15.25"
Presentation:
Beautifully double-matted in Dutch blue and sky blue, housed in a complementary blue frame that harmonizes with the matting tones. The thoughtful framing enhances the luminous quality of Parrish's signature palette.
