This is a stunning full-page illustration by Maxfield Parrish from a 1930 edition of The Ladies' Home Journal, titled "Arizona." This piece represents one of Parrish's last magazine commissions and beautifully reflects his artistic shift from painting "girls on rocks" to creating breathtaking landscapes.

The Artwork:
The scene depicts what appears to be part of the Grand Canyon, featuring a shadowed, craggy canyon wall in the foreground and a sunlit canyon wall in the background. Parrish's masterful use of color brings the canyon walls to life in rich tones of purple, rust, brown, yellow, and red hues. The sky transitions from a darker indigo at the top, gradually lightening as it moves down the composition—a signature technique that showcases Parrish's legendary skill with atmospheric perspective.

Presentation:
Matted in antique white and housed in a complementary blue frame that enhances the artwork's colors, this piece makes a lovely, unique vintage composition ready to display.

Dimensions:

  • Unframed illustration: 14" × 11"
  • Framed: 17.5" × 14.5"

Condition:
Very good to excellent. Minor toning and fading consistent with age, minor edge wear (concealed by matting). The only notable flaws are a few small scratch marks from where the glass broke in its previous frame.

Rarity:
Rarely seen or offered for sale—a real gem for collectors of Parrish's work or vintage American illustration.
